Federal Reserve Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed typically analyzes labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in early September, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of positions created to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Show Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was set to release September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication once the closure started. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are rising, although gradually. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
