Everyone Are Invited to Become the Fourth Haim Sisters Bandmate.
"Any idea when you're chatting with the band?" a text arrives. "I was hoping to ask if I can be their newest bandmate."
There's just a single issue: I also longs to be the Haims' additional sibling. Furthermore, we are in plentiful company. Multiple celebrated supporters have also begged for the honor.
One thing is obvious an irresistible appeal is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their career performing shows at local delicatessens with their parents. Today, they are multiple Grammy contenders.
Like all the best groups, they're a tight-knit unit. Their videos frequently depict them striding in harmony down the roads of Los Angeles. On stage, they play with such pure happiness you inevitably think, "I want to be part of that, too."
"How often on tour that fans told us and said, 'Watching you live, I bought a bass'," states Alana, the most junior of the trio. "It is the ultimate honor. That's an award in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can encourage young girls to form a group."
"So everyone is invited to be the honorary part of the family."
Grammy Milestone
The group are connecting from a break, where they're recovering after an extensive tour in support of their new album, I Quit.
They're presently celebrating the news it's been nominated for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first all-woman band ever in the running for the trophy.
"I follow the nominations every year, so it almost feels like a surreal movie when your name is announced," notes Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I dreaming'?"
The significance of the accolade isn't lost on the band.
"We truly set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a major achievement," says Alana. "However we're just thankful for the pioneers that came before us."
Heartbreak and Laughter
The album was born from a time of transition. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music captures that strange in-between place where you're glad to be free, but not yet ready to start anew.
The words track departures and farewells. The sisters seek love, but not the relationships they've got. You can hear them determining in real life who they aspire to be.
"I adore way of putting it, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a personal statement. You have to actively work on shutting out the outside opinions and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."
Development of Style
That recent toughness demanded a fresh approach – more raw and powerful than anything the band had done before.
For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the drums.
"Drums are such a nuanced thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she says.
"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums cannot begin until we find the ideal drum sound."
Anecdotes and Collective Camaraderie
The band's candor fueled the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters revealed some of their personal horror stories.
Someone ended things with Este over a medical concern. Alana recalled a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.
"When you're going through these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," says Alana. "So to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's therapeutic."
A Confident Future
It's not difficult sense a evolution in the band. These days, Haim are more assured of their place in the music world.
They're major draws, with successful albums and an global fan base.
Yet the sister act will forever be their primary focus.
"My sisters and I have been making music since I was little," concludes Alana. "It feels as if nothing else that we were supposed to do. And I'm really grateful we've gotten here and we're still making music."
