A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's key public works projects.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” affirmed the country's president.
The official announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
